In ancient Hippo, a lawyer was once excluded from church because of his sins (there were guards!) and it was planned to admit him again only after a public announcement of regret for the deeds, as was common practice at that time. Because of his status and age St. Augustine thought it better this skip this ordeal and settle the matter more privately. But the penitent refused his helping hand.
